What is an EEG?

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a simple, yet effective test for measuring electrical activity in your brain. By placing special sensors (electrodes) on your scalp and attaching them to wires hooked to a computer, your doctor can gather details about how well your brain is functioning, so they can diagnose your condition.

An EEG is an entirely noninvasive and painless test. At the time of booking instructions are provided. Sedation is not offered.

What happens during an EEG?

When you come in to PANDA Neurology & Atlanta Headache Specialists for your EEG — the practice provides both pediatric and adult EEGs — you just sit in a chair and hold still. Your registered EEG technologist measures your head and makes a few marks to indicate where electrodes should go.

If your scalp is dirty or oily, your technician may need to clean the targeted areas with a gritty solution first to help the electrodes stick better and to enhance results. Next, your technician attaches the electrodes to your scalp with cream adhesive and hooks on the wires.

Most EEGs take about an hour. All you have to do is lie back and relax in a comfortable position. Often, an EEG is necessary while you sleep, which takes longer, but your doctor lets you know ahead of time if this applies to you.

Once your EEG is complete, your technician removes the electrodes and forwards your information to your neurologist at PANDA Neurology & Atlanta Headache Specialists for review. You will get a call back with results or you may need to come back for a follow-up visit to get your results.

How do I prepare for an EEG?

In some cases, it’s beneficial to sleep less before your EEG to obtain recording in sleep.
